The largest and most popular settlements, most of which are located in
the metropolitan Jerusalem region, have doubled in population over the
last decade. The ten largest settlements house 59 percent of the total
West Bank settler population of 234,487. Almost half—46 percent—of the
settler population live in the five largest settlements. Ariel, at one
time the second most populous settlement, has grown far less than the
average -- 28 percent compared to 91 percent -- and has now been
eclipsed by larger and faster growing settlements catering to the
ultra-Orthodox community.
