Ariel Sharon, prime minister of Israel, stands unchallenged as the architect of Israeli policy in the occupied territories. No foreign leader has challenged him effectively. No plan exists able to thwart his intentions.

Theodore Herzl, the founder of modern Zionism, said in support of a Jewish state, "If you will it, it is no fable." Herzl's exhortation helped inspire the popular movement that created Israel in 1948. But this triumph for the Jewish people after their sad history and the Holocaust was a tragedy for the Palestinians who bore no historic responsibility for Jewish suffering.
